Nikon Nikkor 20mm f4 pre Ai

I'm not an expert photographer or gear reviewer. I just want to share my experience with item I have used. English is not my daily language, so please forgive me if there's wrong words or grammar.

It's an old manual lens from Nikkor, it's very compact lens with 63.5mm diameter and 47.5mm long, it has 52mm screw mount filter ring. My copy is in fair condition, not have much rough on appearance but there are some sign of use considering it's an old lens. It lost a screw on it's back mount but not affect on anything. There's slight of fungus in inner optic and little coating loss on rear optic. Front optic in a good condition, just slight cleaning mark and only visible if we put a light through the lens.

I put this lens on my sony a6000 camera, it's an APSC or crop sensor camera, lens focal length will be 1.5x from full frame sensor, so it's equifalent 30mm lens on sony APSC camera.

Sharpness & contrast:

Nikkor 20mm f4 pre ai at wide open iso:100 speed: 1/160

This lens is sharp! usually I shoot at wide open and it's sharp entire frame and also have a great contrast, it look so contrasty at sample image above but it has darker corners at wide open.

Close focus:

Closest focus is about 30cm, though it's an f4 wide open, it produces a good blurry background.

Low light:

It's not a fast lens, so it would not strugle in low light condition. Here is astrophoto sample of this lens, taken at iso 6400 and speed 20 second at wide open. It's visible alot of cromathic aberration and it's hard to get focus at night especially in no light condition.

Flare:

I think it has minimum flare even I pointing the lens straight to the sun, normaly lens will produce a lot of flares but this one is minimum and also almost of all my old nikkor lens have good flare resistence, if the lens in good condition they're good in handle the light.

Conclution:

This lens is good for you who do traveling or street photography, it's light, compact and easy to manual focus. For you who don't need a low light and auto focus lens,  this lens is good to bring with.

At the end I sold this lens because I get Nikkor 20mm f28 Ai-s, it's more strugle in low light condition.
